We had a blast bringing our large, foam pattern blocks outside and involving them in some great backyard autumn play.
Before going out to play I took one of each shape from our pattern block set and traced the shapes onto a 12 x 18 piece of paper.
For our first exploration outside I hid the shapes around the yard. Little Brother had to look around our yard and find the shapes.
As he found each shape he matched them onto the paper and we talked about the name of the shape. He said the ones he knew and practiced repeating me for the ones he didn't know (like trapezoid, rectangle, and hexagon.)
The next activity was even more fun . . .
I hid all the shapes in a leaf pile!
I gave Little Brother his leaf rake and let him see if he could find the shapes as he moved the pile around.
He had a blast digging through the leaves and calling out the names of the shapes as he found them. We also matched them to the paper so we knew when we had found them all.
We repeated the activity several times, and then he asked to hide the shapes in the pile for me.
I had fun using the little rake to search too!
We're looking forward to a few more days of warm weather and fall fun in our own backyard.
