A "Bad Apple" Craft & Snack

I love when we find great new books at the library! "Bad Apple" by Edward Hemingway is one of our new family favorites.

This sweet tale of friendship tells about an apple "Mac" who wakes up one day with a worm "Will." The two become fast friends, but other apples can't accept the friendship and Mac begins to doubt it. Eventually Mac decides he'd rather be a "bad apple" with his friend than a sad apple without him.

Not only do we love this friendship tale, but it inspired us to both create and snack!
The first thing we decided to do was create apple and worm handprints. I saw this craft a while ago on Pinterest as a great post from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom. Using paint we painted the boys palms red, their thumb green, and the bottom half of their middle finger brown.

We then printed the hands onto white card stock. When the prints dried we used black permanent marker to create faces on both the worms and apples.

We turned our handprints into cards because they were just too cute!

After the boys were finished with their handprints, I surprised them with an easy to create "Bad Apple" snack. Using a fresh apple and a plastic straw I made a small hole near the top of the apple. I then slid one end of a gummy worm into the hole. (Note, I used a very firm plastic straw, like the one found in a reusable iced coffee cup.)

The boys loved this snack! The worm was a fun treat and of course the apple was a healthy snack they already love.

The book is definitely one we'll check out of the library again, and I'm sure we will enjoy the snack again this month!

Did you check out the book after reading this post? We'd love to hear what you think of this sweet tale!

  1. Pinning this for my teacher friends (I'm retired.) Great follow-up for a field trip to the pumpkin (which includes apples) farms this time of the year. Sounds like a great book when talking about bullying?

    1. I think that this would be a great book to include in talking about bullying with younger kids. It also gets to the idea of excluding someone for their differences.

  2. I've seen this book but haven't read it yet. Looks like this will need to move up on my "must read with my kiddos" list!! I love the gummy worms coming out of the apple and the handprint card. Such cute ideas!
