Last week Big Cousin came for the day and we had a lot of fun reading Dr. Seuss' There's A Wocket in My Pocket and creating our own creatures inspired by the unusual ones found in the book.

My favorite part of this project came before the project even started. Big Cousin has been making amazing progress with her reading, and nothing made her teacher auntie prouder than having her read us the entire book!
After reading we started in on the project. I had collected a wide variety of materials so they could get as creative as possible. The list included: wooden peg dolls, corks, different beads, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, feathers, colorful buttons, fake flowers, sequins, and pom poms. We also used permanent markers for adding details afterwards.
Big Cousin jumped right in with several ideas.
Big Brother took a little longer to get involved, but then started to get a few ideas after watching her.
We quickly found we needed to use the glue gun to attach everything. Big Cousin could do that on her own, and with help and close supervision Big Brother learned how to do it too. Both kiddos wound up making several different creatures, and giving them different made-up names.
Later the creatures became part of their creative play and then were featured on the table for lunch. Just like the little boy in the book, we became a house where unusual creatures live!
