It's also a great way to practice learning the alphabet in a meaningful and authentic way.
Teachers call this activity "Read Around the Room" and it can also be done with sight words, specific sounds, etc.
To begin with I printed up a sheet of capital letters. I used a flattened cereal box and a binder clip to act as a clip board. I also attached a highlighter to the set up.
When we got there Big Brother was eager to get started. As we shopped he made a line through a letter each time he saw one in the store. It could be anywhere, on the wall, a sign, and a package or box of food. He marked some letters more than once.
He worked hard to find as many letters as he could, and asked if we could do it again next week. It will definitely be a repeat activity, and I can already think of some other ways we'll use it. How might you give it a try?
