Solstice Slime

This week we've been enjoying looking at all the great ideas from Fun at Home with Kids during their really fun Slime Week! On their facebook page you can find even more great ideas shared by other bloggers too.

We were inspired to try our own version of slime. In honor of this weekend's summer solstice we created Solstice Slime!

For our slime play, we used a traditional borax and white glue recipe. In my years of teaching I've seen this recipe also referred to as "space mud" or the other type of "Oobleck."

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons Borax powder
3 cups warm water
1 cup glue
1/4 cup gold glitter
handful of star sequins
food coloring or liquid watercolor

Directions:
1. In a small bowl mix 2 cups of warm water with the Borax power until in the powder dissolves.
2. In a separate bowl mix the glue, glitter, sequins, and coloring. Mix the remaining 1 cup of water into the glue mix.
3. Combine the two bowls and stir. The goop will quickly come together. Ours was a little runny, but after a sitting a few moments it became more solid.

I set the slime out on a tray for the boys to explore, with a sprinkle of extra glitter and extra star sequins.

We've made slime before and Big Brother is not always a big fan of this type of sensory play, but he decided to explore it anyway. This time our slime was a little more like flubber, it didn't stretch quite as much as I'd hoped. But Big Brother enjoyed poking, molding, and excavating the stars from the slime.

Little Brother explored a little bit too, but he enjoyed it more a little later when he had time to explore on his own. He liked patting it flat and poking a finger into it.

As the slime sat it oozed out into the whole tray and bubbled a little. Big Brother found it fascinating to pop the bubbles. When we were done we bagged the slime up for play another day.

What about you, have you tried slime play yet?
