Pumpkin Spice Playdough

Today was one of those days that already felt a little like November, it was just a little too cool and gloomy to really enjoy being outside. On top of the weather, or maybe because of it, Big Brother really seemed like he was in the mood to squeeze and mash something. So I decided we'd whip up a fresh batch of playdough. Earlier this year we experimented with Chocolate Cake Playdough, so today I was inspired to try a pumpkin version.

This is a cooked playdough recipe, but Big Brother was able to help me mix up all the ingredients before I cooked it. We enjoyed smelling the different spices as we added them into the basic playdough recipe.

The Ingredients
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Food coloring of choice

Directions
1. Combine the dry ingredients in a large pan and mix with a whisk. Then add the wet ingredients and stir with a large spoon.
2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms.
3. Knead the ball of dough gently for a few minutes. Set aside and let cool.
4. Store in a covered container or plastic bag.

I set out the playdough with a miniature pie pan, some utensils from our play kitchen, and some plastic Halloween cookie cutters. Big Brother had fun making pretend cookies, rolling out pie crusts, and reverting to his favorite playdough activity: creating more birthday cakes.
